What is a  Clinical Psychologist?

Clinical Psychology is a specialty that is concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of emotional, cognitive, and behavioral problems.  Licensed Clinical Psychologists are doctorate level practitioners who have successfully completed several years of formal training, national and state licensing examination.  After completing the academic and supervised clinical training in assessment and therapy,  the doctoral candidate must next complete a one year internship followed by a post-doctoral residency.

Clinical Psychologists provide comprehensive care, and can help people work through a variety of problems, from basic life stresses to more complex and difficult issues.  Because of their expertise, Clinical Psychologists often act as consultants to other health care professionals.

What is Transpersonal Psychology?

Transpersonal psychology stands at the interface of psychology and spiritual experience.  It is the field of psychology which integrates psychological concepts, theories, and methods with the subject matter and practices of the spiritual disciplines.  Its interests include spiritual experiences, mystical states of consciousness, mindfulness and meditative practices, shamanic states, ritual, the overlap of spiritual experiences and disturbed states such as psychosis and depression, and the transpersonal dimensions of relationships, service, and encounters with the natural world.  The central concept in Transpersonal Psychology is self-transcendence, or a sense of identity which is deeper, broader, and more unified whole.  The root of the term, transpersonal or literally "beyond the mask", refers to this self-transcendence.

Transpersonal psychology has benefits for both psychology and the spiritual disciplines.  Psychology can expand toward a fuller and richer accounting of the full range of human experience.  The spiritual disciplines can incorporate insights and skills about human development, healing and growth to deal more skillfully with the psychological issues that arise during the spiritual search.  It also provides perspectives on spiritual systems to help understand their similarities and differences.  The field includes theory, research, and practice.

What are the benefits of weaving the traditions of psychology with the spiritual?

Transpersonal psychology has benefits for both psychology and the spiritual disciplines.  Psychology can expand toward a fuller and richer accounting of the full range of human experience and potential and incorporate practices that speak more directly to the depth of our nature.  The Spiritual disciplines can incorporate insights and skills about human development, healing, and growth to deal more skillfully with the psychological issues that arise with spiritual development.  It can use these issues as gateways rather than obstacles to Self-Realization.

What are the key differences between coaching and counseling or therapy?

Counseling and therapy tend to work on healing the past, while coaching is about creating the future you want.  The issues people work on with a coach include relationship and communication, business success, personal projects, life balance, health, financial planning, spiritual development, fitness training and weight loss, career development, etc.  Your coach works with you to support you in identifying the path that will make your life journey more fulfilling and enjoyable.  This entails developing a clear map and action plan to launch you on your road to success.

How does life coaching differ from consulting?

Coaching is actually similar to consulting in that the coach will partner with the you to solve problems, reach goals, design a plan of action and make decisions.  Coaching goes much further.  A coach stays with the you to implement the plan of action.  A coach brings out your personal best, assists you in identifying and prioritizing your needs, values, mission and vision, and then keeps you focused.  A coach will help you recognize your develop your personal strengths and use them to move forward.
